I freaking love this book. I've re-read it from time to time over the course of the last 30 years or so, and enjoyed each read.
The science holds up pretty well. There are no cell phones; but the other incidental technologies make up for the lack. I'm not a fan of arcologies per se, but the streak of libertarianism mixed with the need, in a tightly controlled environment, for order and discipline, is very appealing. And you can't beat the catchphrase, "Think of it as evolution in action".
I found the characters engaging and human. (Shucks, one of them made me a fan of Pimm's Cup.)
While much of the book is an intellectual study, it's not boring and there's enough action and conversation that it doesn't get bogged down.
It's easy to think of the book as a little trite: the Good Guys are very distinct from the Bad Guys, and the Good Guys win for the best libertarian reasons. So if you hate the very idea of libertarianism, this book is so not for you. For everyone else, it's just nifty.
This may be the weakest Niven/Pournelle collaboration; it's certainly in the lower quarter. Since, in my opinion, Niven/Pournelle collaborations rank among the best SF, this isn't saying anything too bad.

This is one of my favorite books. Read it years ago and re-read it recently. As a New Yorker, I find the concept of the giant, self contained community a fascinating idea. It makes you think about the relationship between the government and the governed.
Pournelle is one of the best at writing about complex societies.
A little dated by today's standards but still a great story idea. Read it a few times since university days and have enjoyed each opportunity I had. Finally bought the kindle version to make it easy.
A thundering good yarn. I love the combination of Le Corbusier's machine for living with the idea of the modern "gated community." Did Niven and Pournelle actually see the future when they were writing their future history stories? It seems that the only thing they missed was the collapse of communism. Anyone who loves sf, this is a must.
Another great read. Jerry's prose is like a great wine, it improves with age! Written in the foreseeable future, this book examines our present civilization and how it might change to encompass growing population pressure, urban unrest, and civil disorder, with some good, old-fashioned action thrown in. A great read about "evolution in action….
This book predicts smart phones, WiFi networks, constant computer connections and implanted technology.

Some guesses at the state of the world (or at least the U.S. are optimistic, some are pessimistic but most hit surprisingly close to the bone for a book written 33 years ago. It has held up amazingly well in most cases. They missed the internet, but so did Bill Gates.

As with all Niven/Pournell books the writing is excellent, the story moves fast and the reader is taken along for the ride.

I own this in hardcopy, but could not resist buying it electronically as well.

This book is a little dated now, but it's still a hell of a good read. Some of the things that are posited as advanced technology wouldn't be advanced now, but they were when this book was written 30 years ago. A lot of the thinking that went into this book is still as valid today as it was then, however. And the philosophy behind that thinking is still interesting, as well. when I reread this book just now, I was especially struck by the quotes that begin each chapter. They speak to our current political conditions and our lives today. Highly recommended.
Concept and pacing are OK, characters are believable, but has some glaring instances where suspension of disbelief breaks down. Not least the idea that a tunneling machine which melts its' way through solid rock with extreme heat can fetch up just a few feet underneath a concrete-floored building without causing the concrete to shatter explosively. (Ever hold an oxyacetylene torch to a concrete surface?)
