Revenge of the WroughtIron Flamingos A Meg Langslow Mystery Donna Andrews Books
It has been about a year since the last book and it is back in Yorktown for the craft fair and reenactment of the battle - in period costume per Michael's mother's dictates. Rob is trying to sell his video game but the man is nasty and winds up dead in Meg's booth. The sheriff has hired a big city detective and puts him in charge of the murder. He promptly suspects Meg, her friends and her family so she sleuths to save them all. I did not suspect the killer until the last minute lots of excellent red herrings and viable suspects.I thought that Meg lived near Michael, per the first book, but they are fighting over the distance now. Also really entertaining reading about the video camera with film after the last book drew my attention to the digital camera being awesome. Otherwise not dated at all.

Revenge of the WroughtIron Flamingos A Meg Langslow Mystery Donna Andrews Books Reviews
This is one of my favorite Meg Langslow books partly because it is set during a celebration of the British surrender in Yorktown. Since I took part in a historical drama set only a little earlier in American history I particularly savored the bits about striving for historical accuracy. But the truth is that I fell for the title and the cover illustration before I even opened the book. Of course I read and reread every one of the books in this series.
Okay, I plead guilty. I really like Donna Andrews writing, especially her Meg Langslow series. I like this book enough that even though I have it in paperback, I bought it for the so I can take it when I travel. Like all of the series, this third book is lighthearted and has quite a few ROFDL scenes. Ms Andrews in one of the few authors I read who can take a life or death situation and make it hilarious. I can't say too much about the plot without giving away spoilers, but I will say Andrews shows her clear knowledge of life in Yorktown as well as life in the modern small town South with all its subtleties.
I'm beginning to class Donna Andrews up with Elizabeth Peters with her use of humor in her mysteries. Like Ms Peters, Donna's character, Meg, is smart, funny, and brave with a great way of dealing with her boyfriend, Michael, her various wacky relatives and assorted villains. All without losing her mind, although occasionally she does seem to be teetering on the edge!
As in this book, when Meg finds herself stuck with the usual assortment of weird family members during a reenactment of the battle of Yorktown. Adding to her problems, the chairperson of the reenactment committee is her future mother-in-law, who is determined to make sure everything is completely authentic. Poor Meg finds herself caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. All of which is bad enough until someone decides to use one of Meg's authentic weaponry to eliminate a most unlikable character in her craft tent. So Meg's once more on the trail with a raft of suspects, the savage guard dog Spike, her wildly funny family and her talented, and understanding, fiance, Michael.
It's the year 1781... The Battle of Yorktown... the British are on the verge of surrendering...
Or is it? It's the hope of Meg's boyfriend's mother, Mrs. Waterston, that everyone think that Yorktown has gone back in time to 1781. She's put Meg in charge of selecting craftsmen to sell their wares at the reenactment, as well as almost everything else. It's taking every ounce of Meg's self control to not lash out at Michael's mother, especially as she continues to be blamed for things going wrong.
While stopping fights between the Anachronism Police and her fellow craftsmen, Meg's also trying to keep her brother from making a deal to sell his video game to a possible swindler. When Meg returns to her booth after Mrs. Waterston's opening party, she finds the swindler dead... killed with her own dagger.
Being around period reenactments my entire life, I know how crazy some of the organizers can get when it comes to authenticity. Mrs. Waterston's zealous for authenticity isn't surprising, but her antics did get to be a little too much. My other character issue is the background story on Detective Monty -- his background would never be acceptable in actual law enforcement -- small town or not.
The plot was believable, especially in an age of piracy scandals and people taking desperate measures for revenge. Ms. Andrews was great at dropping hints while still keeping the reader guessing to the very end - as always! The solution came together flawlessly.
