While Mrs Coverlet Was Away Mary Nash Books Reviews

What child wouldn't relate to a "home alone" situation - where they can look after themselves without any interfering grown ups? No wonder this book is guaranteed to be a hit with any child and still endures ever since it was published in 1958. I still love my copy even after all these years and I just can't throw it away.

Super-conscientious Malcolm, practical Molly and somewhat unruly Toad (Theobold) live with their housekeeper, Mrs Coverlet, and find things a bit tight while their father battles to operate a tin mine in New Zealand. Then things get more complicated when Mrs Coverlet is called away on a family crisis.

The children defy the arrangements that were made for such an eventuality by concealing her absence and manage alone because Toad absolutely refuses to stay with Miss Eva. As Mrs Coverlet's absence becomes prolonged, the children develop and grow as they fend for themselves and raise their own finances when the money their father left runs out. Toad is even determined to improve his brains, with surprising results that have ramifications for the whole neighbourhood.

But can the children get away with concealing Mrs Coverlet's absence? No spoilers here - you will have to read the book and find out!
Our teacher read this to our class in 1964 and I remember how much we loved it. We read this book to our five children as well. My wife has read it to her Learning Support Students and it is a book that all children love.
I bought this book as a gift for my mother who read it as a kid. She read it to my kids and they still talk about it.
I read this book as a child, and my children read it. It came up in conversation a few weeks ago, and we all said, wonder if we can still get that cute book? Lo and behold, yes we could, and all of greatly enjoyed revisiting this charming story.
Great book! I read it when I was young (many years ago), and I read it to my 5th grade students now. They enjoy it as well! I occasionally have former students ask if I am still reading this book to my class, and they are always pleased to hear that I still am! Sometimes something is old enough that it becomes new. I bought this copy because my old one was falling apart. It is a great read for children!
One of my favorite books as a kid, and now I love giving these old copies, when I can find them, to grandkids and other family members. It's a fun book for imaginative kids.
I bought this used copy because I have fond memories of loving this book as a child and wanted it on hand for my own child. It's so well-written and such an original, fresh storyline. Also kind of an antidote to the whole helicopter parenting thing. ;-) My son ended up fascinated by tortoiseshell cats and wanted to know if the males really are so rare (they are), which led to looking up some information online. Great author!!
