There’s a lot to like here. This is a richly thought out, multifaceted world. The various forms of magical abilities on display, the complex relationship dynamics between the characters, the in-depth world building, all point to a powerhouse imagination driving the writing. On a copy-editing level, a lot of the phrasing as well is quite beautiful.

I enjoyed this one even more than the first book in the series owing to the fact that there’s that much more story to go around, and I enjoyed the latest plot twists. Moreover, some of the plot points I found emotionally quite powerful, such as Carolyn having to deal with mental “reconditioning.” That’s the kind of horror that crawls under your skin and just stays there, long after you’ve put the book down.

My biggest challenge with the story was that I felt I was at times being asked to absorb too much, especially at the beginning of the story when I was trying to get oriented. And I also often wondered if there was a less convoluted path that could be taken to sneaking in the backstory. But these are not uncommon criticisms for the fantasy genre, where there is just so much world building going on that there’s just a lot to take in. Reading fantasy might be right up there with doing New York Times crossword puzzles for expanding the mind in that regard.

Chasing The Demon Gateway Book 2 edition by Louise G White Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

An astounding read that I was not able to put down. From start to finish "Chasing the Demon," by Author Louise G. White captivated and enthralled my senses. Vivid descriptions and strong characters pave the road for an action pact tale that had me up for nights on end. After reading, "The Calling" Book 1 in the Gateway series, I simply had to buy the next book that I was all to eager to get started. The action and adventure is simply breath taking on a whole other level.

Carolyn, Note, and Ethan once again will take center stage in "Chasing the Demon." Like with book 1 in the series, what I like most is how the main characters are developed with a deep POV that places you in the heart of all the action. In short you will not be able to put it down. The twists will have you bitting you lower lip beginning for more. If you like the fantasy genre with a strong characters and beautifully described sceneries then this is the book for you. Can't wait to see what Author Louise G. White comes up with next!
This continuation of the Destroyers story didn't disappoint - until the very end.

The good

I liked that both Carolyn's and Note's father gained some shades of grey to make them much more interesting.

Mario and Sean became a lot more likable. The new demons and hybrids added to the story are looking interesting, and the plot continues to become more complex we learn more about the different parties and their goals.
Liked Taz and the whole idea of an underground demon community.

The bad

Spoiler

What the hell was up with Carolyn at the end? - In spite of all the brainwashing the Lilim did on her, she kept remembering Note - to the point that it kept their best magical efforts to get her to believe that she was in love with Peter from succeeding. (This is in spite of them losing their bond.)

Then their bond and claiming mark is restored, and Carolyn gets her memories returned to her.

And suddenly Note is chopped liver and she is desperately kissing Ethan and rolling around with him on the ground? Completely ignoring the fact that hunters with dogs out to kill Ethan are right on their heels?

If her bond to Note was still gone, I could maybe see her jumping at Ethan to anchor her (though Ethan was unable to anchor her before Note showed up - not even when he tried to force the bond).

Likewise, if she had been remembering Ethan instead of - or at least as well as Note - while her memories where gone, I could buy her possibly jumping his bones as soon as meets up with him (though the whole 'forgetting about mortal danger' thing, is still a stretch for me).

I may read the next book just see more of the team, as well as to see how Note deals with magic he has been denying until now out of fear that using it would turn him into a monster - the same way he believes it did to his father.

But I dread where the author is planning to take Carolyn's character. I'm not fond of musical relationships for the sake of adding angst and tension.
Book 2 takes up where book 1 left off. I recommend reading them in order to get the most enjoyment out of this urban fantasy sci-fi saga. Carolyn is the Destroyer, a young woman, now nearly 18 years old, who lost her mother and brother to demons. She has supernatural abilities that help her to fight demons and other worlders who kidnap humans. She has teamed with a group who have similar goals. Treachery abounds on Earth by the Agency who abuses humans with special gifts and other worlders. And Carolyn faces danger on other worlds as the chiefs there want to use her for breeding. At the end of the last book Carolyn and team mate Mario have been captured while on mission to one of the other worlds, Empustat. The chief of Empustat is more powerful than Carolyn and he has stolen her memories and embedded false memories to make her compliant. Mario is being tortured, but to what end? And back on Earth the rest of the team are facing treachery, rescuing abused other worlders, and dealing with unwanted desires and jealousies among the team. They cannot get to Carolyn and Mario to rescue them. The relationship between Note and Carolyn is weakening which puts Carolyn at risk of being made into a breeder by an evil and self serving other worlder. This saga is fascinating to me. It is fast paced and circumstances can change rapidly and in unexpected directions. Rescue of Carolyn and Mario is frought with danger. The plot and sub-plots kept me reading well into the night. And how I thought the book would end was nothing like what actually happened. I cannot wait until book 3 comes out.
